Wetsuit Accessories

Swimmers and surfers who are in the water every season will soon find that a wetsuit alone is not enough protection from the elements. Repeated exposure to extremes of cold and sun can be both uncomfortable and damaging for the human body. When more protection is needed, these are the wetsuit accessories to buy.

Rashguards
A rash guard is a lycra or nylon shirt that protects the skin from sunburn or from chafing caused by surfboards and the repeated impact of crashing waves. In many cases, rash guards are worn when a wetsuit is too much protection for specific weather conditions or sporting activities. If it's too hot for a wetsuit, rash guards are a safe and smart alternative.

Boots
Wetsuit boots can vary from high impact socks to genuine lace-up footwear. Toes and soles are often made from plasma or rubber for additional protection. For greater flexibility, choose wetsuit boots with split toes.

Hoods
As much as 50% of body heat is lost through the head, which means that on cold days, wetsuit hoods are essential wetsuit accessories. There are two routes you can take with head protection. Some wetsuits and rashguards come with hoods. The one-piece construction of this option insures minimal seepage, but is impractical for days when a hood is unnecessary. Buying a headless wetsuit and a quality wetsuit hood is probably the best combination of protection and convenience.

Gloves
As with winter gloves, wetsuit gloves are divided into the styles of gloves and mittens. Gloves keep your fingers independent and are great for grabbing. Mittens might be better for paddling a surfboard, but they're less maneuverable and more likely to get water-heavy.

Wetsuit repair and maintenance accessories
No wetsuit purchase is complete without a few wetsuit accessories for repair and maintenance. Wetsuit glue or repair adhesive can help seal off small nicks in your suit. Along with rinsing your wetsuit, the use of a wetsuit shampoo and odor eliminator will keep your wetsuit comfortable and clean.
